How to setup UPS Ground Saver in Shipping plugins (UPS SurePost)

If you’re using a WooCommerce shipping plugin like Shippo Shipping PRO and can’t find UPS Ground Saver listed among the available shipping services, don’t worry. This article explains why that happens and how to configure the plugin settings to properly offer UPS Ground Saver to your customers.

UPS Ground Saver vs. UPS SurePost #

UPS recently rebranded its UPS SurePost service as UPS Ground Saver. While the service name has changed for customers, the underlying service code used by the UPS API (and therefore Shippo API) still uses the old service name for the service code, which is UPS SurePost.

What You Might Notice #

– In the cart, the service appears as UPS Ground Saver, reflecting UPS’s updated services name for this service.

– When selecting shipping services in the settings of the plugin in the plugin, you won’t see UPS Ground Saver listed.
Instead, you’ll find UPS SurePost available for selection, this is the same service, just using its former name.

– UPS Ground Saver won’t appear in the plugin settings when creating a shipping label.
Instead, you’ll see UPS SurePost for selection, which is the same service but listed under its old name.

-In the debug logs, the service code returned by the UPS will also reference UPS SurePost, which is what the Shippo API currently uses internally.

This is not an error, UPS Ground Saver and UPS SurePost refer to the same shipping service.

How to Enable UPS Ground Saver in WooCommerce shipping plugin, such as Shippo Shipping PRO #

To properly offer UPS Ground Saver shipping services for your WooCommerce store:

  1. Go to the “Shipping Services” tab of the WooCommerce shipping plugin, such as Shippo Shipping PRO
  2. Click “Add Services” bottom
  3. Select the “UPS SurePost” service from the drop-down services list

4. Enable the “UPS SurePost” shipping services

5. Save your settings.

    Once enabled:

    • Add items to the cart and enter a new shipping address with a different postal code to trigger a new live shipping rate.
    • If UPS Ground Saver (UPS SurePost) is available for the entered destination, it will be displayed as UPS Ground Saver in the cart at checkout.
    • When you proceed to create the shipping label, the corresponding rate will appear as UPS SurePost (the previous name) in the label generation interface, as returned by the Shippo API.

This ensures that while customers see the updated UPS Ground Saver services at checkout, the correct UPS SurePost service is still used behind the scenes for label generation.

Important Note About Package Weight #

UPS Ground Saver (UPS SurePost) is typically available only for packages over 1 lb.
If you are trying to offer shipping for lighter packages (under 1 lb), UPS uses a different service called UPS SurePost Lightweight, and not all merchants may be eligible for this service.

Be sure to verify package weight requirements and your UPS account eligibility if you don’t see rates returned.

    Summary #

To offer UPS Ground Saver to your customers:

    • Enable UPS SurePost services in the shipping services settings of the WooCommerce Shipping plugins
    • Understand that UPS Ground Saver is just the new name for UPS SurePost.
    • Only package weight meets UPS SurePost’s minimum requirement (typically 1 lb+).
