How to Get Your ShipStation API Key (v1.v2)

If you’re using our ShipStation Shipping PRO plugin for your WooCommerce store, this guide will walk you through how to check, renew, or upgrade your ShipStation API key, whether you’re staying on API v1 or planning to move to the new API v2.

Why This Matters #

ShipStation is introducing changes to its API. While ShipStation API v1 is still supported, it’s now only available to users on Gold, Scale, or higher-tier plans. If you’re on a lower plan, you’ll need to switch to API v2 to continue displaying live shipping rates in the cart and checkout page.

✅ Who Can Continue Using ShipStation API v1 #

If your ShipStation account is on one of the following plans, API v1 will continue to work:

  • Gold Plan – United States, Canada
  • Scale Plan or Higher – UK, Australia, New Zealand, European Union

⚠️ If you’re eligible to keep using ShipStation API v1, make sure your current API key is valid and not expired. If your API key has expired, shipping rates won’t be returned by the ShipStation API, and no shipping options will be displayed in your WooCommerce cart.

How to Check or Renew Your ShipStation API Key #

  1. Log in to your ShipStation account
  2. Go to Account Settings

3. Navigate to Account → API Settings

  • You’ll see your current API key and its status
  • If it says “Expired”, click Generate API Key to create a new one

💡 Don’t forget to update your new API key inside the ShipStation Shipping PRO plugin settings on your WooCommerce site to ensure live shipping rates continue displaying properly in the cart and checkout page.

Switching to ShipStation API v2 #

If you’re moving to the new ShipStation API v2, follow these steps:

  1. In your ShipStation account, go to Account → API Settings
  2. Click the “Select API Version” dropdown

3. Choose “V2 API”

4. Click Generate API Key to get your v2 credentials

💬 Reminder

After generating your new ShipStation API v2 key, make sure to update it in the ShipStation Shipping PRO plugin settings on your WooCommerce site so that shipping rates continue to be displayed in the cart and checkout.

📍Note: ShipStation API v1 and v2 API keys are not interchangeable. Make sure your plugin is using the correct version for your ShipStation integration.

⚠️ API Limitations to Keep in Mind #

While using ShipStation’s API, particularly when retrieving shipping rates, be aware:

  • Some carriers or services may not support live rate retrieval
  • For example, UPS Ground Saver® currently does not return usable rates via the API
  • To avoid issues, check with your carrier to confirm which services support rate browsing via API
